  Improving the creative writing in students  using the mobile phones

     Writing" is the process of using symbols to share thoughts and ideas in a readable form. To write it is essential to understand the basic system of a language. In English, this includes knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. Vocabulary is also necessary, as is correct spelling and formatting.

Original writing that imaginatively expresses ideas and thoughts is creative.

Introduction 

    This is the research conducting on the students of class 6th and 7th standard of my school. 18 students are studying in classes 6th and 7th, standard among them only ten students can write sentences of their own. As their English teacher, I knew that who can write their sentences with very few mistakes I selected those 10 students to do my research.

Problem 

Many students can write a sentence and small paragraph with fewer mistakes but fail to write their own stories, poems, skits, and scripts. Lack of interest, lack of motivation, and lack of guidance and some of the reasons the students face difficulties in creative writing.

Research questions 

  1. How can I create interest in creative writing in students using the mobile?

  2. What kind of creative writing should I improve for students?

  3. What are the challenges I face to improve creative writing in students using mobile?

      I was thinking about how should I improve creative writing among the students, then I planed to inspire them with their interest towards enhancing writing in them. The recent pervasiveness of mobile computing becomes an attractive motivation for ESL learners. We can provide an excellent environment for using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. This offers the learners a chance to practice writing on-the-move. Here I am presenting my research on a design of mobile-based learning to assist the learners of 6th and 7th in improving their creative writing skills. 

    Compared with the past, when the use of information technology was focused on stationary computers, projects in the field of mobile education imply continuous and uncontrolled access of students to the technology. Mobile devices, which are always near a person and belong to him personally, make the education process permanent since students can write at any time, teachers can take care of students' writings outside the classroom also, and use school time to develop social skills.   Continuity of education has another manifestation: mobile phones allow you to continue the educational process even in disaster areas and military conflicts. UNESCO research suggests that this contributes to a more rapid recovery of society after crises. During the pandemic, I reached students through mobile phones.  it's very useful to us using mobile phones effectively in the teaching-learning process. Therefore I decided to use mobile phones to improve the creative writing in students.

        I have collected data from my students, teachers, and parents about their opinion on the idea of my topic I used the Survey Monkey app to collect the data, Close-ended questions are asked to the students, below given are the questions to students.

 

Questions to the students

  1.  Do you like to write stories, poems, skits?

  2.  Do you like to read poems, stories, and skits on mobiles?

  3.  Do you have an interest to write on mobile?

  4. Do you like to use a mobile phone to learn to write?                     

    I asked Open-ended questions to the teachers, the questions are asked to give information about their experiences on using mobile phones to improve the creative writing

Questions to my colleagues and other teachers of English

1. Do you use a mobile phone to improve the writing skill of students and why? 

2. How do you use a mobile phone to teach writing skills?

3. What suggestion would you like to give me if I use the mobile phone to enhance the students’ writing skills?

 Only two questions are asked to parents and the two questions are close-ended questions the below-given question are asked to the parents.

Question to the parents

1. If your child wants to learn writing skills using the mobile will you support him/her?

2. Do you allow your child to learn writing using the mobile?

Data analysis 

    This is the data collected from the selected students which reveal that the students prefer to learn using the mobiles and all the students had mobiles and they are very familiar with them. Most of the students are interested to write on mobile and are interested to read and write using mobiles.  The students' responses are given below you may go through the below link.

      All the teachers from whom I collected the data, said that they used the Mobile to teach grammar, to improve listening skills. Some of the teachers are using mobile apps to teach writing skills. I collected data from eight teachers who already using mobile phones to teach various skills of language but no teachers are using a mobile phone to improve the creative writing in the students. I collected the data from selected ten parents, all parents said that they ready to support their children's education. All parents have mobile and ready to solve any technical problems of students while learning.

Action Plan

   After collecting the data from the students, parents, and teachers I prepared the action plan of two months based on survey data, availability of mobile phones, and learning level of the students.

Week 1 story writing

This is one of the activities in this activity the students learn to write stories.

Step1- The teacher sends a sentence to a student

Step2-The students should add a suitable next sentence to the first sentence and forward both sentences to his friend, 

Step3- His friend should add a suitable sentence or a relevant sentence and forward it to his friend and all 10 students add their sentences and the last students after adding his sentence he forwards it to me.

Step4- The teacher goes through the stories and do necessary changes and forwards the paragraph to all.

Like this, the students learn to express their feelings and imaginations on the page.

 

Week-2 Thoughts writing

In the second week, the students are asked to collect the though of the day from the magazine, journals, and newspapers and post them in what's app group, and asked them to comment on others' posts. By doing this activity for the week students can write thought of the day.

Week-3 Article writing

The teacher will post 4  headings of the newspapers and will be asked, students to prepare the report choosing anyone heading. They gradually learn the way of narration the situation.

 

Week-4 Poem written

The teacher will post a stanza of a poem in the group first two days the students should write a similar stanza that ends with a rhyming word and post it in the group.

 

After two days the students will be asked to write a small poem with the help of teachers.

 

The teacher will give the necessary guidance, 

 

Week-4 status writing

The students will be asked to upload their status 5 times a day,

First, two-day ready sentences will be given to students to post their status in what's an app in a creative way For example: going to market to buy healthy vegetables, reading to gain the knowledge to  light my future

 

After two days the students will be asked to post their status without the help of the teachers.  

Week-5 script writing

The teacher will post the videos of award programs in what's app group and say the students to write the anchoring scripts of a program after watching the videos and post in group.

After three to four days teacher list out the popular TV shows like Big boss, weekend with Ramesh and post in group. the students should choose their favorite show and should imagine they are the anchors of the show and write the script.

Week-6 Skit writing

The teacher will post four skits in the group first two days and say the students to summarize the skits and post in the group.

On the third day, the teacher post summarized skits in group and say the students to write the script of the skit

From the next day, the teacher will send the half-written script of the skit and say the students to complete the skit with their ideas.

Week-7 skit writing

The teacher will post the last part of the skit first two days and asks the students to write the beginning part of the skit

After two days the teacher posts the picture and will ask the students to write a skit with the help of the pictures and post it in the group.

Last day the teacher asks students to write a skit and post it in the group.


Week-8 songs writing

The teacher posts ten English songs in the group and asks students to write their favorite one and post in the group

The teacher will say the students to continue the song lyrics by adding their lines

Last two days the teacher will post the gap-filling lyrics in the group

Week-9 songs writing

The students write song and post in the group, the teacher do the necessary change in them

The students will sing that written song in their voice and share audio in the group.

The teacher does continuous correction and gives guidance in every step of the above-mentioned activities.

Conclusion 

  The students are easily motivated if we use technology to teach them, and this one of the effective methods to teach writing skills. They will enjoy learning using mobile phones, and they never feel bore learning through mobiles. As a teacher of second language English, it's our responsibility to bring something new to class often, so this is one of the best methods to improve creative writing in students.
